Dr. Susan Chan

Susan holds a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University and MPhil and BA degrees from the University of Hong Kong.  In addition to serving as organist at Bethany, she is also an Associate Professor of Music and Piano Area Co-Coordinator at Portland State University.

 

Prior to coming to Bethany, she served as organist/pianist in churches in Washington State, Ohio, Indiana, and Hong Kong.

 

Susan has performed, adjudicated, and given master classes internationally.  Such performance venues include Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall; Chopin’s birth house in Poland; Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall; as well as on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago and the Seattle International Piano Festival Recital Series.  The New York Concert Review described Susan Chan as “a thoughtful musician and a sensitive player”.  Fanfare magazine and BBC Music Magazine praised her “great technical finesse” and “conspicuous refinement” in her CD recordings of piano music by western and contemporary Asian composers.

 

Susan is fond of the city as well as the beautiful nature here in the northwest.  She also enjoys hiking, healthy foods, and travelling.
